![]() ![]() ![]() The hero’s journey as contrived by Campbell is an essentially male, specifically a privileged male, initiation adventure. Not in a mean way, they just didn’t think girls would like it. My first memory of Star Wars in seventh grade was two boys telling me the movie was not for girls. But that doesn’t mean I don’t reflect on those problematic aspects of the saga. Even my “camp” name the summer I was a camp counselor at Namanu was “Ewok,” and I literally lived in a treehouse. I’ve had a lot of fun watching every problematic installment. ![]() Peterson: Let me say right off- I do love Star Wars. Peterson and Corey Dahl recently got together to discuss the latest installment, the female hero’s journey, the Kylo Ren Disney+ sitcom we’re all waiting for, and more. The last movie in the latest Star Wars trilogy, The Rise of Skywalker, doesn’t deviate much from the usual plot points, though of course this time around the hero is a heroine. ![]()

We're a movement for a lot of things, apparently, but we're not a movement for women who need support in their struggles. We're a movement for women who want to be a CEO, we're a movement for women who want equality with white men. Well, then we're not a movement for all women. But then we say that these issues that only some women face are someone else's problem. MK: When we say a feminist movement is for women, it's supposed to advance equality for all women. ![]() Why is it crucial to view those problems through a feminist lens? MD: You argue that feminism has largely ignored the problems that many Black women and women in poverty face: things like food security and education. You're all working together, because otherwise you're not going to make it. ![]() ![]() The reality for poverty, whether you're in the inner city or a rural area, is that you are with your community all the time. There's this weird narrative that the hood is a terrible place, and that no one takes care of anyone and you're out there struggling by yourself. I really wanted to talk about what I saw day to day, as opposed to what people think happens. ![]() ![]() After graduation, Leonard and Madeleine live together when Leonard gets an internship at a biology lab on Cape Cod, and the spring after graduation they marry, when Leonard is able to get his mood swings under temporary control. On graduation day, Leonard has a breakdown and is hospitalized in a mental-health ward, and Madeleine shows her commitment by skipping the festivities and seeking him out. The third major player is Mitchell, a Religious Studies major who is also attracted to Madeleine but whose reticence she finds both disturbing and incomprehensible. ![]() ![]() We discover that Leonard had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder during his first year at Brown, and his struggle with mood swings throughout the novel is both titanic and tender. She becomes enamored with Leonard, a brilliant but moody student, in their Semiotics course, one of the texts being, ironically, Roland Barthes’ A Lover’s Discourse, which Madeleine finds disturbingly problematic in helping her figure out her own love relationship. ![]() One of the pieces of this triangle is Madeleine Hanna, who finds herself somewhat embarrassed to have emerged from a “normal” household in New Jersey (though we later find out the normality of her upbringing is only relative).
